By Ryan Carlson The Golden Bears ice hockey team has outscored its opponents 69-7, eight games into the 2024-25 season.
The home-opening weekend, Cal hosted San Jose State University in back-to-back games. The matchup was
highlighted by two shutout victories (9-0, 6-0) for freshman goalie Aidan Comeau.
“The goaltending has been incredible, Comeau has been unbelievable.” Head coach of the Golden Bears
Devin Cox said.
Two weekends later, Cal hosted a former conference rival the UCLA Bruins. Friday night was a tightly
contested 4-2 victory. The following night, Berkeley scored nine goals and Comeau made 28 stops to earn a
9-1 win and improve the Bear’s record to 4-0.
“It’s the deepest group we’ve had - that I’ve seen either playing or coaching.” Cox said. Cox played for UC
Berkeley as a freshman in 2017 through graduating in 2021. He is in his second season as head coach and
third season as a member of the coaching staff.
“When you get the combination of depth, high-end talent and good goaltending - it yields good results,” Cox
said.
Cal’s success continued against the UC Davis Aggies in back-to-back games. The Aggies compete in the
American Collegiate Hockey Association men’s division three - one division under the Golden Bears.
Last weekend, Berkeley traveled to Southern California to take on the USC Trojans in two games. Cal won 4-1
and 5-1, improving to an 8-0 team record.
The Golden Bears welcomed eight new players onto the team last offseason including goalie Aidan Comeau
and the only true freshman on the team, defenseman Trent Teruya.
“We have a lot of good and new talent on the team,” Golden Bears captain Tyson Storr said. “And some key
returning players from last season.”
Storr was tied for third in points scored on the Golden Bears last season with 34 in 22 games played.
Cal will return home to face the University of Washington Huskies on Saturday, October 26 and Sunday,
October 27. The weekend will be highlighted by Cal’s Halloween Faceoff on Saturday night.
